After 7 years in UK universities including three years as a research scientist, Max qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Thornton Baker (now Grant Thornton) in 1977.

Subsequently he worked in a part of Lloyds Bank Group in Business development, successfully opening the north west regional office for the company. Then he was appointed as an internal management consultant for Roneo Vickers Group head office working in subsidiaries all over Europe, and in 1979 he was appointed as Commercial Manager of a major subsidiary.

In 1980 Max joined the founders of a small computer company called MicroAPL Limited as Financial Director. MicroAPL grew by 150% per annum for 3 years under Max's effective control, after which time Max guided the company through a successful application for Venture Capital. Soon afterwards Max setup another computer company called Talos Limited, to build computer networks and develop better accounting software. Talos Limited is now associated with Kempster & Dale, and is jointly owned by Jeff and Max. Max has worked with Jeff since 1988 but officially joined the partnership as a practicing accountant in 2009.

Max has undertaken major consultancy projects in the selection of computerised accounting systems. In addition to working alongside Jeff in all aspects of the day to day accounting and tax work in the practice Max also handles the organisation's internal computerisation and is responsible for the development of the Quantus software.
